Do Fewer Things
Matt D'Avella has been an antidote to hustle culture for years now. He preaches something different from the “get‑rich‑quick” guys you see all over the internet, overflowing your life with false truths, fake news, and outright dangerous propositions. The only way to learn from those people is to listen to their message and then do the exact opposite of what they preach.
Yes, hustle culture lied to you. As Matt shows, it’s actually about doing less, and I feel that. Since I started blogging on the small web, there have nevertheless been numerous times when I was tempted to make it bigger.
“You should blog every day, you know?”
“There’s this new shiny website where you need to post a new song every day that describes how you feel. Come and join!”
“You have no weekly newsletter yet? You should really start one!”
“Enter this month’s 30‑day challenge that forces you to write even though you have no time and don’t always want to. It’s good for you!”
No. It’s not.
It even begins to sound like this hustle culture that is actually supposed to exist only somewhere far away from the wonders of this small web.
Every time I was tempted to expand my personal website with something new, it started to feel like something new I was forced to do every day, whether I liked it or not. It just doesn’t work for me. What does work is to do less, to regain my focus, to write what I want, when I want to.
Do fewer things.
