Just Bring the Camera

I guess when you start out on your photography journey, you sometimes just need some luck.

When I was in Bratislava last summer, I hadn’t had my camera for that long yet. Before arriving there, I had only used it a few times at events or on random walks through the city where I live. I can’t say I really knew what I was doing. I was just hoping for photographic moments to present themselves to me.

And you know what? Sometimes they do. Sometimes the advice that you should always take your camera with you is actually really good advice.

I took my camera on one walk in Bratislava, late afternoon, early evening. I was walking on a bridge, looking out over the river, and just as I was walking there, the sun began to set. Of course I knew the sun was going to set, but I wasn’t prepared for what I saw in front of me: the sun glistening, reflecting in the water before me, with Bratislava Castle in the background. A beautiful sight on a beautiful evening.

Sun breaking through dark clouds above Bratislava Castle, its light reflecting in the river below, with river cruise ships moored along the bank.

It just goes to show: even when you’re starting out, when you don’t yet know all the technicalities of where you should be and at what time to get a certain light, it’s a good idea to take your camera with you anyway. Because it’s in moments like this, those random moments, that your learning journey begins.
