Life Lessons from a Carefree Musician

I like James Blunt.

Not just for his music. Let’s be honest, aside from You're Beautiful, there isn’t much that the masses recognize. Sure, he has other songs, but none of them are as well-known. And even that big hit? He was high when he wrote it (or so the lyrics tell us).

But what I appreciate about Blunt goes beyond his music. A recent article about his Saturday routine explains why: he's great at keeping life in perspective and not taking it too seriously.

Take this quote about life perspective, for example:

"We are musicians, court jesters; we are not soldiers, policemen, aid workers, teachers, doctors, nurses. They are the people who do the real jobs, who should be the celebrities of the world."

Blunt’s ability to not take himself too seriously was also clear in a recent marketing stunt. He joked that he would change his name to Blunty McBluntface if the 20th anniversary edition of Back to Bedlam hit number one. Lucky for him, it didn’t.

Another quote from the same article sheds more light on his attitude:

"Lucky is the way I feel in the job that I have now. Having had that [Army] job puts everything I do now into perspective."

That explains a lot.

We could all live a bit more like Blunty McBluntface James Blunt. Not everything is meant to be taken so seriously. We’re here, we live, we work, we laugh, we take care of each other… and then it’s over. That’s it. So enjoy the time you’ve got. Which is exactly what I’ll do when I go to Blunt’s concert in March next year.

See you there, James. Until then, keep doing what you're doing: be serious when it’s needed, but don’t forget to keep goofing around the rest of the time.
