Reykjavik, please wait for me

Summer holidays are a perfect time for traveling. It seems only fitting that a recent kmcd-prompt asked the appropriate question:

"If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?"

One of the first countries that comes to mind is Iceland - a place I've visited before, yet at the same time, haven't experienced.

Let me explain.

In 2007, the Icelandic city of Reykjavik hosted the International Children's Games, an international sports event for young athletes. I had the honor of representing my athletics club there and managed to reach the B-finals of the 1500 meters.

The event gave me a glimpse into the life of professional athletes and how they experience the countries they visit. Or, more accurately, the hotels, sports facilities, and airports of those countries. I spent a few days in Reykjavik, but all I saw were the school where we slept, the hotel where we had breakfast, the stadium where I ran, and the swimming pool where we relaxed in the evenings. No visits to volcanoes, no natural hot springs, and no views of the probably amazing landscapes I could have seen if I had visited for another reason.

It's a bit like going on holiday to an exotic, faraway country and not leaving the five-star resort you stay at: you might as well stay home.

One day, I'll return to Iceland and give it the attention it deserves. Please wait for me, Reykjavik.
